Today's Panic: WinMentor won't start
«License expired» or «Invalid license key» — and the whole team is stuck. There are 4 typical causes, and all are quickly resolvable.
Cause 1: Unpaid Annual Maintenance
WinMentor blocks access if the annual maintenance has not been paid. Check:
1. Old emails from your distributor (any outstanding maintenance invoice?)
2. Call the distributor, pay, and receive a new key within 1-24 hours
Temporary solution: Contact the distributor for an emergency key (valid for 7-30 days) until the payment is processed.
Cause 2: System Date Modified
Someone manually changed the Windows date (e.g., for testing ANAF (the Romanian tax authority) reporting or recovery). WinMentor detects discrepancies and blocks access. Solution: Set the correct date, sync with time.windows.com (Settings → Date & Time → Sync now), and restart WinMentor.
Cause 3: USB Dongle Not Detected
Older versions of WinMentor use a USB protection dongle. If it is not detected:
1. Check the dongle LED (it must be lit)
2. Reinstall the driver (HASP/Sentinel) — download it from the distributor's website
3. Change the USB port (preferably a direct port on the motherboard, not a hub)
4. Restart Windows + restart the HASP service
Cause 4: Corrupted Database
Rarely, a corrupted WinMentor database triggers a false license message.
1. Service → Maintenance → Check database integrity
2. If errors are reported → Recompact the database
3. If it still fails → Restore from the latest backup (see «WinMentor Backup»)
How to Avoid This in the Future
1. Set a calendar reminder at 11 months after each maintenance payment
2. Pay annually in full (not monthly — to avoid the risk of forgetting a payment)
3. Ask your distributor for auto-renew with an advance invoice
4. Weekly backups (better than monthly)
Conclusion
The «License expired» error causes justified panic but offers a quick resolution. In 90% of cases, it is due to unpaid maintenance. Call the distributor, pay, and you will be back online in a few hours. For zero stress in the future — automate your payments.
